Kanchanjunga Trek

Kang-chen-zod-nga", meaning "Five Great Treasuries Of The Snow", actually, has seven major summits. To the locals, Kanchanjunga (8585 m.), the third highest mountain in the world, is the abode of gods who bestow prosperity and benevolence on the mand their lands. The avalanches that Kanchanjunga throws down are said to be the largest anywhere! The major ethnic group inhabiting the Kanchenjunga region are the Limbus who along with Rais have earned respect as fearless infantry men-the "Gurkhas". Your journey to this remote area begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar in the east of Nepal, followed by a drive to Basantapur (2220 m,) from where you head north to the villages of Chauki (2700 m), Gorja Gaon (2000m), Amjilasa (2490 m), Ghunsa (3340 m), Khambachen (4040 m) and Lhonak (4790 m) to Pangpema (5140 m.) which also serves as the Base Camp for expeditions attempting the North Face of Kanchanjunga and the culmination of the first part of the trek. You then retrace your steps to the village of Ghunsa and back to Taplejung or Tumlingtar for your flight back or you can head east over the Lapsang La (5110 m.) to Tseram and Ramze and then to the Yalung Glacier (4800 m.) towards the south which completes the second part of your journey. From here you start on your return journey heading south through the villages of Torontan, Yamphudin, Mamankhe and Keswa to Taplejung from where you will board and aircraft for Biratnagar and then fly out to Kathmandu.
